What Does SPD Mean on a Consumer Unit?

If you have recently looked at a modern consumer unit, you may have noticed a device marked SPD. But what does SPD mean, and why is it becoming increasingly common in homes and businesses?


SPD stands for Surge Protective Device. It is designed to protect an electrical installation and connected equipment from sudden, short-duration increases in voltage, commonly known as electrical surges or transient overvoltages.


What Is an Electrical Surge?

An electrical surge is a sudden spike in voltage that travels through an electrical system. Although it may last for only a fraction of a second, it can potentially damage sensitive electronic components.

Power surges can be caused by:

  • Lightning strikes nearby

  • Switching operations on the electricity supply network

  • Motors, transformers and certain types of lighting

  • Large appliances switching on and off

  • Electrical faults or disturbances within an installation

Modern homes contain more electronic equipment than ever before, including televisions, computers, broadband routers, smart-home controls, LED drivers, heating controls, EV chargers and appliances with electronic circuit boards.

A voltage surge may cause immediate failure, or it may gradually weaken electronic components and shorten their working life. The IET explains that SPDs are used to protect the consumer unit, wiring, electrical accessories and sensitive equipment connected to the installation.


What Does an SPD Do in a Consumer Unit?

An SPD monitors the incoming electrical supply. Under normal conditions, it remains inactive and allows the installation to operate as usual.

When a damaging voltage spike occurs, the SPD limits the excess voltage and safely diverts the surge current away from the protected circuits. This reduces the voltage reaching connected equipment.

An SPD can therefore help protect items such as:

  • Televisions and entertainment systems

  • Computers and networking equipment

  • Washing machines and dishwashers

  • Boilers and heating controls

  • Smart-home systems

  • LED lighting and electronic drivers

  • Fire alarms and other safety systems

  • EV charging equipment

An SPD does not guarantee that every appliance will survive every possible electrical event. However, it can significantly reduce the risk of damage caused by common transient overvoltages.


Where Is the SPD Located?

In many modern installations, the SPD is fitted inside the consumer unit, close to the incoming electrical supply.

It usually looks like a small modular device positioned alongside the main switch, RCBOs or other circuit-protection devices. Depending on the consumer unit design, it may have a status window showing whether it remains operational.

If there is insufficient space inside an existing consumer unit, surge protection may sometimes be installed in a suitable separate enclosure next to it. The correct arrangement must be assessed and installed by a qualified electrician.


What Do the SPD Indicator Colours Mean?

Many SPDs have a small status indicator.

Although the exact colours and markings depend on the manufacturer, they commonly mean:

Green: The SPD is operating correctly.

Red: The protective module may have reached the end of its service life and could require replacement.

Always check the manufacturer’s instructions, as indicator designs can vary. A red indicator does not normally mean that the entire consumer unit must be replaced. In many models, only the SPD cartridge or module needs to be changed.

This work should be completed by a suitably qualified electrician.


What Are Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 SPDs?

There are several categories of surge protective device.


Type 1 SPD

A Type 1 SPD is designed to handle high-energy surges associated with direct lightning currents. It may be required where a building has an external lightning protection system or where the installation has a particular exposure to direct lightning effects.


Type 2 SPD

A Type 2 SPD is commonly used at the origin of domestic and light-commercial electrical installations. It protects against transient overvoltages caused by indirect lightning effects and electrical switching events.

Many surge-protected consumer units contain a Type 2 SPD or a combined protective device selected for the installation.


Type 3 SPD

A Type 3 SPD provides additional protection close to particularly sensitive equipment. Examples may include properly specified surge-protected socket outlets or point-of-use devices.

Type 3 protection is generally used as supplementary protection rather than as a replacement for correctly selected protection at the consumer unit. The IET also states that multiple SPDs must be properly coordinated when more than one device is installed.


Is an SPD the Same as an RCD or RCBO?

No. These devices perform different safety functions.

An SPD helps protect against short-duration voltage surges.

An RCD helps protect people by disconnecting the supply when certain levels of earth leakage are detected.

An MCB protects a circuit against overloads and short circuits.

An RCBO combines overcurrent and earth-leakage protection for an individual circuit.

A modern consumer unit may contain several of these devices because each one protects against a different electrical risk.


Are SPDs Required in UK Consumer Units?

Surge protection requirements are covered by BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. Amendment 4 to BS 7671:2018 was officially published on 15 April 2026 and can be applied to new installations, alterations and electrical inspection work. The previous edition remains in a six-month transition period following that publication.

Whether a particular installation requires an SPD depends on factors such as:

  • The consequences of a surge

  • The type and use of the building

  • The installation design

  • The value and sensitivity of connected equipment

  • The electrical supply arrangement

  • Lightning exposure

  • The outcome of the relevant design or risk assessment

Protection is especially important where an overvoltage could cause serious injury, loss of life, significant financial loss or loss of important data.

For other installations, the electrical designer or installer should explain the available protection and assess the installation against the current requirements. The decision should not be based simply on whether an older consumer unit already contains an SPD.


Does an Older Consumer Unit Need an SPD Upgrade?

An older installation without an SPD is not automatically unsafe simply because it was installed under an earlier edition of the Wiring Regulations.

However, adding surge protection may still be worthwhile, particularly where the property contains expensive or sensitive electronic equipment.

An electrician will need to check:

  • The type and condition of the existing consumer unit

  • Whether there is sufficient space

  • The earthing arrangement

  • The installation’s fault-current characteristics

  • Compatibility with the existing protective devices

  • Whether an adjacent SPD enclosure would be more suitable

  • Whether a complete consumer-unit replacement would offer better long-term value

An SPD should not be selected or installed as a DIY modification.


Can a Plug-In Surge Protector Replace a Consumer Unit SPD?

Not usually.

A surge-protected extension lead may provide an additional level of protection for equipment plugged directly into it, but it does not protect the complete fixed electrical installation.

Whole-installation protection is normally positioned at or near the origin of the installation. Point-of-use protection may then be added for particularly sensitive equipment where required.

For the best protection, all devices must be correctly selected, installed and coordinated.


Is an SPD Worth Having?

For many homes and commercial premises, surge protection is a sensible investment.

Replacing several damaged appliances, LED drivers, control boards, computers or smart-home devices could cost considerably more than installing suitable surge protection.

An SPD is particularly worth considering when:

  • Replacing or upgrading a consumer unit

  • Rewiring a property

  • Installing an EV charger

  • Adding solar panels or battery storage

  • Installing smart-home technology

  • Protecting computers or business data

  • Installing expensive lighting controls

  • Protecting boilers, alarms and safety systems


How Do I Know Whether My Consumer Unit Has an SPD?

Look for a device marked with wording such as:

  • SPD

  • Surge Protective Device

  • Surge Protection

  • Type 1

  • Type 2

  • T1

  • T2

  • T1+T2

It may also have a green or red status window.

Do not remove the consumer unit cover or touch internal components. Consumer units contain potentially lethal voltages, even when individual circuits appear to be switched off.


Ask a qualified electrician to inspect the installation when you are unsure.
