What Is a Fire Rated Downlight?

A fire rated downlight is a recessed ceiling light designed to help protect the opening made in the ceiling for the fitting. This is important when the ceiling is built to provide a level of fire resistance.

So, what makes it different from a standard downlight?

A fire rated LED downlight is designed with special fire-resistant materials. Many models use an intumescent pad around the fitting. When exposed to high heat, this material expands and helps close the opening around the downlight, helping to slow the spread of fire through the ceiling.

In simple terms, it helps keep the ceiling protected where the downlight has been fitted.

Where Can Fire Rated Downlights Be Used?

Fire rated downlights can be used in many different spaces, from everyday rooms at home to larger commercial and refurbishment projects. The key is choosing a fitting that is suitable for the room, ceiling and installation requirements, including compliance with building regulations.

You may want to consider fire rated downlights for:

Living rooms and bedrooms for clean, recessed lighting
Hallways and landing areas where a neat ceiling finish is important
Kitchens and open-plan spaces for practical everyday lighting
New-build homes and flats where fire-rated ceilings may be part of the building design
Extensions and renovation projects when replacing existing downlights or upgrading existing lighting
Offices and commercial spaces where recessed lighting is commonly used
Refurbishment and maintenance work where existing ceiling requirements need to be considered
Bathrooms and moisture-prone areas, including bathroom lighting, when the chosen fitting has the right IP rating for bathroom downlights

Need Extra Protection for Damp Areas?

The IP rating is especially important when choosing a downlight for a bathroom or another area where the fitting may come into contact with moisture. For these installations, fire rated downlight IP65 can provide a higher level of protection against dust and water than a lower-rated fitting. However, the right choice will depend on where the light is being installed and the requirements of that particular area.

Always check the product details before buying to make sure the downlight has the right fire rating, IP rating and installation specification for your project.

Choose the Right Fire Rated Downlight for Your Project

Not every room or installation calls for the same type of downlight. Thinking about how the light will be used before choosing a fitting or comparing lighting solutions for the project or space can make a noticeable difference to the finished result.

Fixed Fire Rated Downlights

Fixed fire rated downlights keep the light directed straight down, making them a straightforward choice for general room lighting.

They work particularly well when you have already planned where the light needs to fall and do not need to adjust the direction after installation. For hallways, bedrooms, living areas and other general spaces, a fixed fitting can provide a simple and tidy solution.

Tilt Fire Rated Downlights

If you want greater control over where the light falls, a tilt fitting can offer more flexibility.

Tilt fire rated downlights allow the light to be angled, which can be useful for highlighting a particular area, feature or part of a room. They can be worth considering for spaces where the lighting layout needs a little more versatility.

IP65 Fire Rated Downlights

An IP65 rating provides a higher level of protection against dust and water compared with lower-rated fittings, making suitable IP65 downlights a popular choice for areas where moisture is a consideration.

Our range includes IP65 fire rated LED downlights in suitable designs, including bathroom downlights for damp environments. As with any electrical product, check the exact product specification and the requirements of the installation before choosing a fitting.

GU10 Fire Rated Downlights

GU10 fire rated downlights use a GU10 lamp holder, giving you flexibility when selecting a compatible GU10 lamp.

This can be useful for electricians, contractors and homeowners who want more choice when it comes to lamp type, colour temperature or future replacement. Our current range includes 240V GU10 fire rated options.

What Should You Look For When Buying?

Choosing a fire rated downlight does not have to be complicated. Start with the practical requirements of the room, then look at the style and lighting preferences.

1. Fire Rating

First, check the fire performance of the downlight and make sure it is suitable for the ceiling construction and fire resistance required for your project. A fire-rated fitting should always be installed according to the manufacturer's instructions.

2. IP Rating

Consider where the fitting will be installed. A standard fitting may be suitable for dry indoor spaces, while an IP65 fire rated downlight may be more appropriate where greater protection from moisture is required, such as for bathroom lighting.

3. Fixed or Tilt

Think about how you want the light to work in the room. Fixed fittings are simple and direct, while tilt fittings give you more control over the direction of the light.

4. GU10 or Integrated LED

GU10 fittings allow you to use a compatible replaceable lamp. Integrated fire rated LED downlight have the LED light source built into the fitting. The right choice depends on your project, maintenance preferences and the specification of the particular product.

5. Finish

The finish may seem like a small detail, but it can change the overall look of a ceiling. White can create a clean, understated appearance, while satin nickel and polished chrome can add a different touch to contemporary interiors.

6. Colour Temperature

Think about the atmosphere you want to create. Warm white can provide a softer, more relaxed feel with a warmer tone, while cool white can give a brighter, crisper appearance. If you're buying GU10 fittings, check which compatible lamps and colour temperatures are available.
